Elevated on pillars, the design integrates cross-laminated timber and modular units to create adaptable living spaces that respond to flooding challenges while enhancing privacy for residents.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated design protects against flooding while enhancing ground access.
02
Modular wooden units can be easily reconfigured or replaced over time.
03
Cross-laminated timber provides structural integrity and sustainability.
04
Vertical privacy is achieved through a layered spatial organization.
05
Wrapped staircase contributes to both stability and open interior flow.

The Shelf addresses the pressing issues of flooding and rising sea levels, creating a residential solution with a focus on safety and sustainability. Set against various geographic backdrops, the design presents an innovative way of living that prioritizes resilience. The concept revolves around elevating living spaces above potential floodwaters, allowing for a more secure and adaptable environment.

Structure and Elevation

The design consists of five plates elevated on pillars. This configuration provides a small footprint, reducing land usage while addressing flooding concerns. The elevation allows both safety and privacy for residents. A wrapped staircase encircles the structure, delivering access while also providing stability against lateral forces. This arrangement promotes an open interior layout, encouraging a sense of community among inhabitants.

Modular Design

Between the elevated plates lie modular wooden units, each assigned a specific residential function. This modularity offers residents the flexibility to customize their living spaces to suit changing needs. The ease of reconfiguration is an important aspect, allowing the design to evolve as families grow or lifestyles change. This adaptability supports a sustainable approach to residential living.

Vertical Privacy

The layout emphasizes vertical privacy, with distinct zones for public and private activities. The ground level is designed for communal interaction, while the upper areas provide retreat and solitude. This organization creates a balanced living environment, where socialization and personal space coexist comfortably. Residents can engage with their community while also enjoying quiet moments.

Materials and Sustainability

The Shelf incorporates specific materials to support its design goals. Cross-laminated timber offers strength and sustainability within the framework. Insulation enhances energy efficiency, contributing to responsible living. Plywood is employed in various internal components, supporting the modular approach. Additionally, white-painted hot galvanized steel adds durability and a coherent aesthetic to the project.

Through its focus on elevation, modularity, and careful material selection, The Shelf creates a contemporary living space that meets the challenges of climate change. Each design element is thoughtfully integrated to work with its environment, providing a practical yet inviting atmosphere for residents. The project stands as an example of modern residential architecture, highlighting the importance of adaptability and resilience in an ever-changing world.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
