5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated modular structures designed to withstand seasonal flooding.
02
Incorporates locally sourced cross-laminated timber panels for sustainable construction.
03
Charred wooden shingles provide additional weather resistance and aesthetic appeal.
04
Features communal terraces that foster social interaction among residents.
05
Built with adaptable design elements to accommodate varying family needs.

## Overview

Floodscape is located in Keamari Bandar, Sindh Province, Pakistan, addressing the pressing challenges faced by coastal communities in response to climate change and rising water levels in the Indus River Delta. The design focuses on creating resilient housing that provides sustainable living spaces while fostering community cohesion and enhancing environmental performance.

## Spatial Strategy and Community Engagement

The design incorporates elevated structures supported by wooden posts to keep living spaces above potential floodwaters. Each housing unit consists of two levels, ensuring safety during adverse weather while mitigating flood risks. The arrangement of the units encourages community activities oriented toward the water, establishing visual and physical connections without sacrificing privacy. Open spaces and terraces within the layout promote social interaction, facilitating communal gatherings that cultivate community ties and encourage stewardship of the local environment.

## Materiality and Environmental Considerations

Floodscape utilizes a range of sustainable materials that contribute to its ecological effectiveness. Primary materials include wood, aluminum, and glass, which together provide structural integrity and aesthetic warmth while maximizing natural light and views. The design incorporates modular and prefabricated components to ensure efficient construction and adaptability for individual families. By sourcing materials locally, the project minimizes transportation emissions and supports local economies. Additionally, the focus on passive cooling and ventilation reduces energy dependence, fostering a low-energy lifestyle within the community.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
