Elevated Living Spaces with Cross-Laminated Timber and Local Stone

Project in-detail

Elevated on piles to preserve the local ecosystem, the structure combines salvaged wooden tiles and locally sourced stone to create a sustainable workshop and living space alongside a lake in Latvia.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated design minimizes ecological impact by allowing vegetation to grow underneath.
02
Integration of features that support local bat populations enhances biodiversity.
03
Use of salvaged wooden tiles adds historical context and sustainability.
04
Workshop constructed from locally sourced stone reinforces site connectivity.
05
Inner courtyard provides a sheltered area for artistic activities and community engagement.

The PAINT'house project is located in Latvia on a slope next to a lake, focusing on sustainability and a strong connection to the natural environment. It consists of two distinct volumes that serve specific purposes while promoting a sense of harmony with the landscape. The design concept aims to inspire residents by enhancing their interaction with nature.

Design Concept

The first volume is elevated on piles, allowing for minimal disruption to the natural water flow below. This elevation encourages local vegetation to grow, supporting the ecosystem. The design integrates features that accommodate local bat populations, highlighting a commitment to environmental care within the architectural approach.

Material Selection

Salvaged wooden tiles sourced from old buildings are used in the first volume, along with exposed cross-laminated timber that forms the core of the residential area. These materials not only provide warmth and texture but also align with principles of sustainability by reusing resources. The overall effect creates an inviting atmosphere that connects the interior to the outdoors.

Functionality and Interaction

The second volume functions as a workshop, constructed from stone found on-site. This choice strengthens the relationship between the building and its environment while also offering a cooler space for work. The layout includes elements that protect an inner courtyard from wind, providing a sheltered area for social and artistic interactions.

Entrance and Outdoor Space

The entrance is thoughtfully placed at a lower level, facilitating easy access to an outdoor space meant for artistic activities. This arrangement fosters a direct connection between the interior and the landscape. Features such as functional storage and sheltered areas contribute to the living experience, encouraging residents to engage more deeply with their surroundings.

A unique aspect of the design is how it brings together shelter and nature, allowing them to coexist. The interplay between the elevated living areas and the lush landscape creates a setting where creativity and natural beauty are always in close reach.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
