The House of Nature establishes a deep connection between living spaces and the natural environment. Set in diverse landscapes, including grasslands, rivers, and cliffs, the residence is designed for adaptability and harmony with its surroundings. The concept focuses on functionality while fostering a close relationship between the interior and exterior, ensuring comfort and sustainability for its occupants.

Central Element

At the heart of the design is a large granite stone that serves a crucial role in the overall structure. This stone not only supports the house but also acts as a divider between different areas. Elevated above the ground, the residence is protected from possible flooding and integrates beautifully with its environment. The layout separates the living areas, with one side dedicated to social spaces such as the kitchen and living room, while the other side accommodates the bedroom and rest areas. This arrangement promotes openness and flow while providing necessary privacy.

Functional Adaptability

Beyond its structural function, the granite stone incorporates a gap that offers practical storage for smaller equipment. This thoughtful use of space enhances the home's usability, maintaining a clean aesthetic without sacrificing functionality. The raised design also allows ample natural light to enter, creating bright and inviting living spaces that connect with the surrounding landscape.

Material Considerations

The materials chosen for the House of Nature emphasize durability and environmental consideration. The granite stone foundation is paired with an aluminum base and steel joints for added strength. A timber frame supports the building, while large glass frames invite views and daylight inside. Plywood roofing and cladding provide warmth and contrast, helping the home blend with its natural setting. Photovoltaic panels are included to encourage the use of renewable energy, aligning with sustainable living practices.

Details and Features

The design focuses not only on aesthetic aspects but also on being resilient against environmental challenges. Elevating the home and selecting a mix of robust materials demonstrate a thoughtful approach to modern living. Every detail has a purpose and contributes to the harmony of the residence within its environment. The balance of light, texture, and form reveals a contemporary approach to sustainable living, allowing nature to be part of daily life.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
