Elevated Glass Structure Framed by Metal Envelope with Black Lava Views

Project in-detail

A large stained glass window frames views of the surrounding black lava fields within a modular glass structure, sheltered by a distinctive metal envelope, serving as a visitor center for nature enthusiasts.
5 key facts about this project
01
The building's exterior features a metal envelope that adapts to weather conditions by varying thickness.
02
A large stained glass window connects the interior to views of the black lava fields.
03
The design includes a dedicated outdoor space with a fireplace for social interaction.
04
Pedestrian pathways provide direct access to the entrance, enhancing visitor flow.
05
Photovoltaic panels in the car park contribute to the center's renewable energy use.

The visitor center is located in an area rich with natural beauty, designed to function as both an entry and exit point for those exploring the environment. The overall design concept focuses on creating a structure that fits well with its surroundings while offering important services for visitors. A modular approach is used, with the building presented as a glass cage that is protected by a unique metal shell. This outer layer is influenced by the forms found in the local landscape.

Design and Functionality

The layout of the building includes four modular squares, each serving a specific purpose. The first module is dedicated to a café with a kitchen, providing visitors with a space to relax and refuel. Close by is an exhibition and multimedia area that contains an office for staff. The third module serves as a hall, featuring an information point as well as restrooms and small storage facilities to assist in daily operations.

Alongside the enclosed areas, there is an external module equipped with a fireplace, designed for social interaction and outdoor gatherings among visitors. Above this area is a spacious resting place on the first floor, highlighted by a large stained glass window that frames beautiful views of the surrounding black lava fields. This feature not only enhances the indoor atmosphere but also creates a direct visual link between the inside of the building and the natural world outside.

The building is oriented along a north-south axis, raising the living and relaxation areas to maximize views of the landscape. This careful positioning allows visitors to fully experience the distinctive features of the area, making the natural surroundings a part of their visit.

Paths for pedestrians lead directly to the entrance, creating an efficient access route for visitors. Nearby, the car park has been designed with sustainability in mind, featuring photovoltaic panels. These panels capture renewable energy, supporting the center's operations while minimizing environmental impact.

The protective metal shell of the building is noteworthy for its varying thickness. Its design allows it to adjust and open to let in sunlight while also offering shelter from the weather. This attention to the exterior demonstrates a clear understanding of local climate conditions, enhancing user comfort and experience.
