Ozolini on Silent is an architectural retreat located in the Latvian forest, designed as a quiet space for individuals seeking peace and a connection with nature. The retreat serves guests such as backpackers, yogis, and urban dwellers, providing an environment that fosters meditation and self-reflection. The overall design concept emphasizes silence and simplicity, creating a thoughtful relationship between the structures and the natural landscape.

Cabin Layout and Arrangement

The retreat comprises wooden cabins placed with care to fit the land's natural features. Each cabin's layout considers the slope and sunlight, ensuring that they receive adequate natural light throughout the day. Some terraces are oriented toward the sunrise while others look to the sunset, inviting guests to engage with the landscape and enjoy the shifting light.

Structural Design and Materials

Each cabin is based on a modular grid system that simplifies the arrangement while keeping the structural dimensions compact. Foundations are built using wooden trunks, which adapt to the hill's slope. This method reduces the impact on the environment. The columns are designed at varying heights, allowing each cabin to be leveled evenly without making major changes to the landscape. This thoughtful approach helps blend the cabins with the surrounding environment.

Sustainable Features

Sustainability plays a significant role in the retreat's design. Water is collected from the roofs and stored in tanks for both cold and hot use. The design includes a dry toilet system that efficiently separates solids from liquids and manages waste with minimal environmental impact. These features highlight a commitment to responsible resource use.

Lighting and Joinery

Cabins utilize natural light effectively, with large openings that capture sunlight during the day. At night, biodegradable oil lamps provide warmth without harsh brightness. The cabins use Japanese joinery techniques that allow wooden parts to fit together securely without metal fasteners. This choice adds to the overall aesthetic while respecting craftsmanship and environmental values.

Each cabin offers views of the surrounding forest, allowing guests to enjoy nature's beauty from within. The design encourages an atmosphere of reflection, providing a retreat from the noise of daily life.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
