The Hearth - a repose in the wild is located in the tranquil forests of Latvia. This space serves as a meditative retreat, reflecting the country’s cultural identity while inviting users to engage with nature. The design embodies four key themes—vigor, wisdom, beauty, and strength—creating an environment that encourages introspection and connection with the surroundings.

Concept and Cultural Resilience

The design emphasizes cultural resilience shaped by Latvia’s historical experiences. It integrates contemporary design with the essence of Latvian heritage, providing a space that nurtures reflection. This connection between the structure and its natural setting is intentional, fostering a deep relationship between users and the environment.

Light and Spatial Dynamics

Employing the principles of chiaroscuro, the design explores the interplay between light and shadow. The use of both straight and curved lines adds to the visual complexity, inviting users to engage with the space fully. This contrast not only adds beauty but also creates a sense of harmony between inside and outside, enhancing the overall experience.

Adaptive Structure

Elevated on adjustable supports, the design adapts to different terrains while promoting sustainability. This elevation allows users to interact with the surrounding landscape from various perspectives. The arrangement of spaces divides areas into public and private zones, maximizing natural light while promoting a peaceful atmosphere inside.

Material Choices

Materials are chosen for their functionality and comfort. The construction includes a vapor barrier membrane, mineral wool insulation (80mm), a vapor permeable membrane, and internal wood cladding (15mm). These elements work together to improve energy efficiency, creating a warm and inviting environment. The use of wood connects the structure to its natural surroundings, reinforcing a sense of place.

Social Interaction and Community

A key feature of the design is the communal fire pit, which acts as a gathering spot for users. This element encourages social interaction and shared experiences. By incorporating cooking into a communal setting, the design fosters a sense of community, making the act of preparing food both functional and meditative.
