The observation tower is situated near Kurgi farm in the North Latvia Biosphere Reserve. It serves both as a viewpoint into the surrounding landscape and as a space for visitors to learn about the area’s ecological importance. The design concept focuses on connecting people with nature through carefully planned architectural features. The structure is meant to guide visitors, offering them a variety of experiences as they explore the site.

Core Concept

At the center of the structure is a communication hub that leads visitors toward several directions. This layout allows individuals to engage with different views of the landscape, telling a story through their movement. The horizontal balconies extend from the core, designed to follow the contours of the land. These open spaces provide clear sightlines and foster a deeper connection to the natural environment.

Visitor Experience

On the top floor, a cabin provides expansive views of the landscape. This cabin is thoughtfully designed to offer privacy, featuring wooden blinds that can be adjusted by the visitors. This flexibility enhances the comfort of those using the space, allowing them to take in the surroundings at their own pace. The cabin serves as both an observation area and a retreat, inviting reflection amidst nature’s beauty.

Design Objectives

The design accomplishes four important goals: offering panoramic vistas of the landscape, representing the regional character of North Latvia, attracting visitors to engage with the space, and providing educational insights into the biosphere reserve. Each of these objectives complements the others, creating a cohesive experience that balances enjoyment and ecological understanding.

Materials and Structure

Material choices are evident in specific features, such as the wooden blinds used in the cabin. These elements enhance the functionality of the space while also adding warmth. The tower is supported by a steel structure, ensuring stability and durability. This combination of materials promotes a careful balance with the natural surroundings, making the observation tower a fitting addition to the landscape.

The design invites exploration and interaction with the rich biodiversity of the North Latvia Biosphere Reserve. It allows visitors to appreciate the natural world from an elevated viewpoint, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
