5 key facts about this project
The Kurgi Observation Tower is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere of Latvia. It draws inspiration from the local grass, particularly its curving leaves. The design aims to fit well within the natural environment while providing visitors a unique experience. As an observation point, the tower invites exploration and reflection through its carefully considered spaces and layout.
Design Concept
The concept emphasizes a form that mimics the natural landscape. Upon arrival, visitors begin a gradual ascent that reveals new views at each level. This progression engages users with the surrounding landscape, encouraging them to appreciate the scenery of Kurgi Farm and the biosphere as they move upward.
Spatial Organization
At the top, the cabin features large glass walls that offer expansive views. This design allows visitors to take in the landscape from an elevated position. Inside, the cabin includes different areas for relaxation and focused observation, providing a lounge space for casual gathering and a study desk for those who wish to observe closely.
Lighting and Atmosphere
The lighting design includes two modes for different experiences at night. The observation mode uses soft lighting, ensuring safe movement while allowing guests to enjoy the moonlit surroundings. The social lighting mode creates a warm atmosphere within the cabin, highlighting its features and encouraging interaction among visitors.
Materiality
Materials chosen for the tower reflect its connection to the surrounding environment. Local resources such as Latvian spruce are used for their natural look and sustainability, while weathering steel adds to the structure's durability and visual appeal. Latvian dolomite or sandstone, combined with mesh balustrades, enhances the functionality of the tower while reinforcing its place within the biosphere.
The design invites visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape. Each ascent creates an opportunity for reflection and engagement with nature. The elegant curves of the tower echo the surrounding environment, creating a space where comfort and connection to the outdoors coexist.
