The architectural design project in Myvatn, Northern Iceland, is situated to enhance the visitor experience while honoring the area's unique geological landscape. It serves as an educational center, inviting people to explore and understand the volcanic features that define this region. The main idea behind the design is to encourage a connection with nature while providing essential amenities for guests looking to learn.

Design Concept

The inspiration for the design comes from the striking geological characteristics of the local area. Key features, such as Lago Myvatn and the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, shape the project's intention. By integrating these elements into the design, the aim is to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of Iceland’s volcanic activity among visitors.

Functional Spaces

A variety of spaces are incorporated into the proposal including coworking areas, a cafeteria, a library, offices, and auditoriums, all anchored by a central exhibition hall. These spaces are designed to encourage interaction and promote learning, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the geological significance of the area while benefiting from necessary facilities. The layout facilitates easy movement throughout, making the experience smooth and accessible.

Integration with Nature

The design reflects a commitment to sustainability and cultural respect, emphasizing the importance of blending with the surrounding landscape. By thoughtfully positioning the building in the context of Northern Iceland’s geology, the approach underscores an awareness of environmental impact. The forms and arrangement are designed to mirror the nearby terrain, creating a dialogue between the built environment and the natural world.

Gradients and open spaces are used to echo the volcanic landscape, offering visitors a way to interact with the site on multiple levels. This thoughtful relationship between architecture and natural features enhances the experience, encouraging guests to engage with both the constructed spaces and the captivating geology of Iceland.
