"Of this Earth House" is a residential design created for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The location emphasizes accessibility and comfort for its inhabitants while promoting a connection with the surrounding environment. The design focuses on an open floor plan that allows for easy movement and interaction within the space. Through thoughtful architectural choices, the project aims to enhance the daily experience of its residents.

Natural Light and Spatial Organization

The layout includes key areas such as the living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, private courtyard, and main entrance. Each of these spaces is intentionally arranged to provide smooth transitions and maintain a sense of privacy. High ribbon windows are strategically placed throughout the house, allowing natural light to fill the rooms. This emphasis on daylight not only brightens the interiors but also creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for the occupants.

Materiality and Thermal Performance

Adobe is the primary building material used in the home. This material is well-known for its excellent thermal qualities. Thick adobe walls help keep the interior warm during colder months and cool during hotter seasons. The material also acts as a sound barrier, creating a peaceful living environment. A Kiva fireplace made from adobe serves as a focal point, providing warmth and enhancing the overall aesthetics of the space.

Functionality and Built-In Elements

The house prioritizes functionality by incorporating built-in furniture in various areas. These elements are designed to maximize usability and ensure that each part of the home serves its purpose effectively. The layout promotes both social interaction and personal privacy, allowing residents to enjoy a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Each detail is designed to enhance the living experience while remaining accessible to all.

The design of "Of this Earth House" reflects a careful balance of light, space, and materials. It creates an environment that caters to the specific needs of its inhabitants. A cozy earthen Banco surrounds the Kiva fireplace, inviting residents to gather and relax, encapsulating the essence of the home’s design approach.
