The Iceland Movie Pavilion serves to highlight and celebrate the cinematic history associated with Iceland's remarkable natural landscapes. Located in a setting that amplifies the bond between Earth and film, the pavilion functions as a cultural center that invites visitors to explore films shot in Iceland and to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding environment. The design concept integrates the building with the landscape, creating a connection that enhances the experience of both art and nature.

Site Organization

The layout is designed to facilitate visitor engagement. An entrance hall welcomes guests, transitioning into an information shop and bar where visitors can enjoy refreshments and learn about offerings. Central to the space is an exhibition area that showcases various films, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the narratives integral to Icelandic cinema. A separate cinema room enhances the pavilion's function, providing audiences with a dedicated space to view films in a carefully crafted environment.

Architectural Concept

The architectural idea focuses on maintaining the integrity of the local landscape by creating a new "hill." This design lets visitors experience entering an underground space, fostering a deeper connection to the Earth's natural surroundings. The structure is carefully oriented along an east-west axis to maximize daylight and minimize environmental disruption. This approach reinforces the relationship between the building and its scenic context, making elements of nature a key part of the visitor experience.

Material Selection

The design thoughtfully incorporates materials that resonate with the Icelandic setting. Concrete forms the core structure, offering both stability and durability while reflecting traditional construction methods. The concrete roof, layered with earth and gravel, helps regulate temperature and visually merges with the landscape. Three-layered windows improve thermal comfort while providing clear views of the natural environment, allowing a direct connection between inside spaces and the scenery outside.

Design Details

The architecture of the Iceland Movie Pavilion pays attention to essential details that enhance the overall experience. Spaces such as a café and technical rooms are included to support the functionality of the pavilion while encouraging visitor interaction. The three-layered windows not only allow natural light to enter but also connect those inside with the dramatic Icelandic scenery. This combination of functionality and careful material choice leads to a design that reflects the spirit of its location, creating a unique environment where film and nature coexist harmoniously.
