The Carousel of Life is an architectural design project that emphasizes the balance between solitude and social interaction within a contemporary context. Situated in a mountainous landscape, the project aims to explore human psychology through its carefully designed spaces. The overall form is characterized by a robust rectangular silhouette complemented by circular apertures that connect the interior to the outside environment. This design effectively facilitates a flow between various functions, creating an environment conducive to both introspection and community engagement.

Materials play a crucial role in the architecture of The Carousel of Life. The primary structural element is reinforced concrete, selected for its durability and contemporary aesthetic. Large glass panels are strategically placed to maximize natural light and visually integrate interior spaces with the surrounding landscape. Steel cables provide additional structural support while maintaining a minimalistic design ethos. Wooden accents throughout the interior soften the overall atmosphere, promoting warmth and comfort within social areas.

Dynamic Rotational Mechanism and Spatial Configuration

One of the distinctive features of The Carousel of Life is its proposed dynamic rotational system. Designed to rotate in a 21-hour cycle, this mechanism allows the structure to subtly shift perspective, aligning with the natural rhythms of day and night. This unique design approach not only encourages interaction with the natural environment but also fosters a sense of continual movement within the space.

The architectural layout emphasizes a balance between public and private spheres. Semi-open areas facilitate communal activities, while well-defined alcoves allow for private reflection. Each space is purposefully crafted to accommodate different modes of engagement, reflecting the project's thematic focus on the duality of solitude and connection.

Sustainability and Ecological Integration

Sustainability is a key consideration in the design of The Carousel of Life. Elements such as green roofs and solar panels are integrated to promote ecological sensitivity and energy efficiency. The design harmonizes with its natural surroundings, ensuring that the building serves as both a functional living space and a respectful addition to the landscape.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
