Dynamic Roof Form with Horizontal Louvers for Meditative Experience

Project in-detail

Built with a dynamic roof form and horizontal louvers that facilitate natural light and connection to the surrounding landscape, the space serves as a tranquil environment for meditation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Meditation space designed to enhance user interaction with nature.
02
Dynamic roof shape mirrors the surrounding topography.
03
Horizontal louvers filter light while blurring indoor and outdoor boundaries.
04
Natural axis guides visitors through the meditative journey.
05
Altar spaces incorporated for personal reflection and connection.

The meditation space is designed to create a strong connection between the user and the surrounding natural environment. Positioned among trees, the structure features a dynamic form that follows the shape of the landscape. The main idea is to help individuals reach a state of mindfulness, where the journey to the meditation area becomes an essential part of the overall experience.

Site Response

The design responds to the specific features of the site, taking advantage of the existing topography to create a natural path. This path invites visitors to explore and reflects the relationship between the architecture and its surroundings. The shape of the roof mirrors the slope of the land, emphasizing the integration of the building with the environment and enhancing the meditative atmosphere.

Interaction with Nature

Key elements like walls with horizontal louvers facilitate the interaction between the interior spaces and the outside nature. These louvers filter the incoming light and create a soft play of shadows inside. This design encourages users to think about their place in the space, inviting them to consider the balance between the natural world and human-made structures.

User Experience

The layout prioritizes the experience of those using the space by creating areas for external meditation and altars. It features divisions made with horizontal louvers and frames that draw people in. Inside, vertical louvers challenge traditional perceptions of walls and ceilings, allowing individuals to engage with the space from their unique perspectives. This promotes a variety of personal experiences within the structure.

In quiet moments, the sound of leaves and gentle light patterns on the walls offer a serene environment for meditation.

The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.
