The "Frozen Curtain: Iceland Cave Tower" is an architectural design project situated in Northern Iceland, encapsulating the essence of the region's unique geological characteristics and atmospheric phenomena. This project integrates a multifunctional structure with the surrounding landscape, creating a space that serves as both a visitor center and a lookout area for observing the Northern Lights. The architecture is designed to enhance the natural beauty of its environment while inviting exploration and interaction among visitors.

The design employs a variety of materials, including cast-in-place concrete, acrylic glass, mirrored panels, and metal elements, to achieve both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. The layering of these materials reflects the icy textures of the Icelandic terrain while allowing for a dynamic interaction with light throughout the day and night. With its abstract form and fluid lines, the structure visually resonates with the rocky cliffs and expansive skies of Iceland.

Unique Design Approaches

The architecture of the Frozen Curtain is distinguished by its emphasis on transparency and connectivity with nature. The use of acrylic glass and mirrored panels allows for an immersive experience, as the structure reflects and refracts light, enhancing the visual connection to the surrounding landscape. This design decision creates an environment where visitors can fully appreciate the natural phenomena, such as the dramatic display of the Northern Lights.

Additionally, the project incorporates sloped rooflines that mimic the natural topography of the region, facilitating effective snow management and blending seamlessly into the environment. The organization of space within the structure comprises distinct volumes, each serving different functions—such as communal lounges and private viewing platforms—encouraging movement and exploration.

Functional and Aesthetic Considerations

The building's design supports a dual function: it serves as a retreat for visitors seeking tranquility while providing facilities for gatherings and community events. Viewing platforms are strategically placed to maximize panoramic vistas, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery. The thoughtful arrangement of spaces promotes interaction while respecting individual experiences of the natural environment.

The integration of eco-friendly design principles ensures that the project aligns with sustainable architectural practices. This includes passive heating and cooling techniques that leverage natural light, minimizing energy consumption and reducing the ecological footprint of the building.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
