The Flamingo Flight Sequence combines nature and architectural design to create an engaging experience centered around the graceful movements of flamingos. Located in a scenic area rich with wildlife, the project functions as both a pathway and an observation space, encouraging visitors to connect with the natural surroundings. The design concept revolves around a lively path that mimics the flight patterns of flamingos, offering an immersive encounter with the environment.

Design Concept

The heart of the design is a pathway that not only allows passage but invites exploration. This route is not just about getting from one point to another; it offers a sensory journey. Visitors can take part in various activities along the way, promoting relaxation, reading, and social interaction. The design encourages a deeper appreciation for the relationship between people and nature.

Key Features

A prominent aspect of the design is the Bird Observation Tower, which enhances the experience by providing views of the ecosystem from above. Positioned strategically, the tower highlights the surrounding landscape while inviting visitors to observe birds in their natural habitat. It becomes a center point for exploration, drawing attention to the spectacle of wildlife and the beauty of the outdoors.

The Boardwalk serves as another significant element of the project. It guides visitors through different ecological environments, integrating accessibility with a sense of adventure. The layout leads to various habitats, allowing individuals to interact with the diverse landscape. Gathering spaces along the boardwalk promote community and social engagement, creating spots for people to come together.

Dynamic Pathway

The Internal Path is especially noteworthy for its design, which reflects the fluidity of flamingos in flight. Walking this path provides a sensory experience that embodies the vibrancy of the natural world. The design choice enhances the journey, encouraging visitors to engage with the landscape on a personal level.

Attention to detail defines the project's approach, blending key elements of architecture and nature. Thoughtful placement of observation points provides users with opportunities to appreciate wildlife from various angles. Each part of the design invites interaction, making the Flamingo Flight Sequence a unique space for discovery and reflection within the natural environment.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
