Project in-detail

With driftwood facades that echo the natural landscape and volcanic rock foundations designed for durability, the structure integrates community spaces with a focus on sustainability and environmental sensitivity.
5 key facts about this project
01
Driftwood used in the facade is sourced locally, enhancing the project's connection to its environment.
02
Volcanic rock foundations provide durability suited to the harsh Icelandic climate.
03
Large glass walls maximize natural light while framing views of the natural landscape.
04
Community areas are designed to encourage social interactions among users.
05
The structure's sloped roofs are optimized for efficient snow drainage.
The architectural project "Reflection" is a thoughtfully designed structure located in Iceland, aiming to create a seamless interaction with the surrounding landscape. This project emphasizes simplicity, practicality, and sustainability, characteristic of Icelandic architecture. It incorporates local materials and traditional design elements while addressing modern functionality and community needs.

The project serves multiple functions, including a snow groomer garage, locker rooms, community space, restrooms, a terrace, and a viewing cabin. Each component is purposefully arranged to facilitate a connection between indoor and outdoor environments, allowing occupants to appreciate the natural surroundings. Large glass facades enhance the flow of natural light, contributing to energy efficiency and providing expansive views of the landscape.

Unique Design Approaches and Materiality

"Reflection" employs a range of unique design approaches that set it apart. The use of volcanic rock for the exterior walls not only ensures durability but also ties the building to its geological context, reinforcing the connection to Iceland's natural environment. This choice of material reflects the local landscape and promotes sustainability by utilizing resources that are readily available.

Additionally, driftwood is incorporated in the interior design, aligning the space with its natural setting. The overall aesthetic focuses on a color palette inspired by Iceland’s landscapes, including deep reds and blues, which resonate with the earth and sky. This intentional choice enhances the project’s integration into its environment.

Community-Centric Design Elements

The design emphasizes community interaction, with specific spaces dedicated to social gatherings and activities. The arrangement of the functional areas fosters movement between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating opportunities for engagement with both nature and fellow community members. The viewing cabin serves as a focal point for observation and appreciation of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the experience of the site.

Architectural sections and plans illustrate the careful consideration of user experience, with spatial organization designed for practicality and accessibility. The project's architectural design principles reflect a commitment to creating a harmonious relationship between the built environment and the Icelandic landscape.
