"The Spirit of Sentinel" is located in the southeastern region of Iceland. It serves as a visitor center that blends the themes of Norse mythology with the design of a space meant to engage the landscape. The structure draws upon the image of a dragon, a protector figure that invites visitors to connect with the breathtaking scenery surrounding it.

Design Concept

The project takes inspiration from the legends of Níðhöggr, Jörmungandr, and Fáfnir, weaving their narratives into the built environment. The design creates an experience that feels welcoming and reflective of the local culture. The observation platform, with its multiple levels, allows for expansive views of lakes and volcanoes, inviting visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of Iceland’s varied terrain.

Material Choices

Built with a sturdy metal frame, the structure is designed to withstand the challenging climate typical of the region, which includes high winds, fog, and cold temperatures. This choice of material enhances durability and reduces the need for future maintenance. Red fabric elements are also used, adding a touch of color and suggesting movement, much like a dragon in flight. The combination of these materials grounds the building in both practicality and aesthetic appeal.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability plays an important role in the design. The project incorporates systems for renewable energy, including a Megapack battery and a wind generator farm. These features demonstrate a commitment to both environmental responsibility and efficient energy use, contributing to a lower impact on the local ecosystem while supporting the needs of visitors.

Landscape Integration

The design carefully merges with the surrounding landscape, featuring gravel walking trails and landscaping with native herbs. Bridges that signify the geological connection between the Americas and Europe enhance the site’s overall experience. These elements add educational value, informing visitors about the significance of the area while creating a pleasing atmosphere.

A notable aspect of the structure is its facade, which mimics dragon scales. This design gives the building a textured appearance that changes with the light, making it visually engaging throughout the day. The varied use of materials and forms creates a dialogue with the natural environment, reinforcing the connection between the architecture and its mythological inspiration.
