### Project Overview

**Location**: The Great Northern Distillery, Dundalk, Republic of Ireland
**Project Area**: 492 square meters | 6701.6 square feet
**Program**: Community Kitchen & Café

The Community Roots Café occupies a site within the Great Northern Distillery, designed to revitalize this historically significant area by serving as a hub for community engagement and culinary education. The building integrates contemporary architectural solutions while honoring the distillery's heritage, fostering a connection to local agriculture and promoting sustainable practices.

### Spatial Strategy and User Experience

The café's design promotes connectivity and interaction, featuring large windows and open corridors that enhance natural light and visual access to surrounding orchards and public spaces. The interior layout comprises distinct zones, including a primary café area, workshop spaces, and a mezzanine level, arranged to facilitate fluid movement and accessibility. Comfortable seating provisions and outdoor areas encourage social gatherings and educational workshops centered around local food and culture.

### Materiality and Sustainability

The selection of materials emphasizes local sourcing and environmental responsibility. Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) forms a sustainable structural element, while reclaimed wood in flooring and secondary features adds to the rustic aesthetic. Brick cladding complements the industrial character of the distillery and provides thermal mass. Energy-efficient strategies are embedded in the design, including a steam heat exchanger for utilizing waste heat and rainwater systems to support orchard irrigation. These elements collectively illustrate a commitment to sustainable practices while reinforcing the café's integration with its local context.
