Desert One is located in the Arabian Oryx Protected Area in the southern region of the UAE. The design aims to foster a meaningful relationship between occupants and the surrounding desert. It emphasizes sustainability and cultural relevance, showcasing the realities of desert living while blending traditional practices with modern design.

Concept and Philosophy

The central idea behind Desert One is to incorporate sustainable practices that support the desert ecosystem. Reflections of traditional architecture are evident, demonstrating how the built environment can harmonize with natural settings. The architecture is designed to coexist with its surroundings, creating a balance between human habitation and the arid environment.

Adaptability and Sustainability

A notable feature of Desert One is its adaptability to the demanding desert climate. The project follows a 'cradle to cradle' life loop, ensuring an efficient and responsible use of resources. It emphasizes self-sufficiency, using local construction techniques and materials sourced from within the UAE, although specific materials are not mentioned in the presentation text.

Human Experience and Engagement

Design considerations also focus on the experience of people living in the space. The layout promotes social interaction while providing areas for personal reflection. Gatherings in communal spaces encourage connections while private zones allow for solitude. This balance caters to varying human needs, reflecting an understanding of the challenges of living in the desert.

Climate-Responsive Design

Desert One effectively employs strategies that respond to the climate. It avoids mechanical cooling systems and instead utilizes a range of natural techniques for maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. This approach connects the architecture with the conditions of desert living, encouraging residents to feel the heat, shade, and wind as part of their everyday experience.

The architecture draws attention to the fundamental elements of the desert: heat, shade, water, earth, wind, sky, and fire. Each aspect is designed to reinforce the connection between human habitation and the desert ecosystem, illustrating a thoughtful way to live in harmony with nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
