At the heart of a natural rift, steel elements define a warm gathering space that harmonizes with Iceland's rugged landscape, offering a unique dining experience.
5 key facts about this project
01
Located in a rift, the restaurant offers a distinctive descent that enhances the visitor experience.
02
The design incorporates steel elements that provide structural integrity while blending with the landscape.
03
A central fireplace serves as a focal point, promoting warmth and social interaction in the dining area.
04
Large openings ensure views of the surrounding terrain, connecting diners with nature.
05
Greenhouses adjacent to the restaurant highlight a commitment to sustainability and local agriculture.

The Greenhouse Restaurant is located in a captivating landscape near Reykjahlíð, where it connects with its natural surroundings. The design focuses on creating a unique dining experience set within a rift in the land. Visitors feel the pull of this space as they descend into the restaurant, fostering a strong sense of connection between the built environment and the nature that surrounds it.

Structural Integration

A notable feature of the design is the staircase leading down into the restaurant. This not only serves as a transition but also guides visitors on a journey of exploration. A prominent chimney acts as a beacon, drawing attention towards the entrance. The design thoughtfully incorporates greenhouses, which not only support sustainability but also enrich the environment around the restaurant. The relationship between these greenhouses and the restaurant illustrates a harmonious blend of functionality and natural beauty.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the restaurant is carefully laid out to encourage social interactions while maintaining a cozy atmosphere. The central fireplace in the dining room becomes a warm focal point, enhancing the underground setting. Surrounding the fireplace, areas such as the open kitchen and multifunction room are arranged to allow for various uses, accommodating different events and gatherings. This organization ensures both practical use and comfort, making the space welcoming for all.

Materiality

The design includes "blades of steel," which are integral to the construction and likely form part of the staircase. This choice of material contributes to the overall modern feel while ensuring the structure is strong and dependable. The steel aligns with the intention to blend contemporary elements into the rugged landscape, allowing the restaurant to stand out without overpowering the site.

Large openings likely provide views of the stunning surrounding landscape, enhancing the dining experience. This clear connection between the interior and outdoor scenery highlights the project’s intent to merge comfort with the beauty of nature. Guests can appreciate the outside world while enjoying their meals, capturing the spirit of dining in a natural setting.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
