Set against the volcanic landscape of Dimmuborgir, the dark stone cylindrical structure integrates harmoniously with its geological surroundings while serving as a visitor center that offers panoramic views of the unique terrain.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cylindrical shape reflects the natural craters of the surrounding landscape.
02
Constructed using dark stone to enhance connection with the volcanic terrain.
03
Interior layout promotes easy visitor flow through concentric circles.
04
Freely accessible roof offers panoramic views of Dimmuborgir.
05
Utilizes prefabricated reinforced concrete for efficient assembly and strength.

The design located in the Black Lava fields of Dimmuborgir draws inspiration from its unique geological features. This area is defined by solidified lava formations, valleys, and peaks, all shaped over time by volcanic activity. Functioning as a visitor center, the design aims to connect with its environment. The cylindrical form of the building reflects the natural shapes present in the landscape. Overall, the concept emphasizes both usefulness and a thoughtful relationship with nature.

Form and Massing

The building's design incorporates both solid and hollow shapes, showcasing its architectural identity. The cylindrical structure rises within the landscape, representing a contemporary interpretation of the natural craters that are characteristic of the region. On one side, the mass opens up to create an entrance, allowing visitors to transition smoothly from the outside world into the welcoming interior space.

Materiality

Dark stone clads the exterior of the building, reinforcing its tie to the surrounding volcanic environment. This choice of material enhances the visual unity of the design and ensures that the building is resilient against the harsh weather conditions typical of the area. The dark stone helps to ground the structure, providing a contrast to the bright ruggedness of the landscape that envelops it.

Interior Layout

Inside, the spaces are organized in concentric circles, promoting easy movement and interaction among visitors. This arrangement optimizes sightlines and enhances the overall experience of the nearby vistas. The roof is freely accessible, offering expansive views that invite visitors to engage fully with the natural scenery from above.

Structural Considerations

The main structure is built with prefabricated reinforced concrete, a choice that supports strength and quick assembly on site. This material offers high accuracy in dimensions and helps maintain the building’s integrity. Using concrete reduces the overall environmental impact of the construction process, addressing sustainability concerns while ensuring the building’s durability.

Natural Light

Carefully placed openings and skylights allow natural light to fill the interior, enhancing the spatial qualities and creating a pleasant atmosphere. This attention to light connects the interior space with the dramatic landscape outside. The result is a setting that encourages visitors to appreciate both the architecture and the natural beauty that surrounds it.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
