The project in Latvia presents a thoughtful integration of architecture with the surrounding landscape. Focused on a retreat program, it centers on meditation as a main experience, inviting participants to connect deeply with nature. The design emphasizes simplicity and functionality, creating a space aimed at promoting peace and reflection.

Design Concept

The design highlights a straightforward and practical approach, resulting in a modest structure that blends into its environment. The Ozolini household serves as a reference point, illustrating a sense of timelessness. Participants are involved in the construction process, allowing them to shape their own meditation spaces. This engagement fosters a personal connection to both the building and the landscape.

Spatial Configuration

The layout of the structure is carefully arranged to make the most of natural light and views. Openings are thoughtfully placed to enhance sightlines, guiding attention toward unique trees and wide views of the forest. This arrangement fosters a clear connection between the inside and outside, enriching the experience for those using the space and encouraging immersion in nature.

Practical Elements

Essential features for modern living are included in the design, such as a dry toilet, food and water storage, and a small stove. These additions ensure that participants can comfortably engage in retreat activities without sacrificing daily needs. The shape of the cabin—a five-square-meter cylinder—harmonizes with its surroundings, supporting principles of sustainability and energy efficiency.

Sensory Experience

The sounds of the forest play an important role in the retreat experience. Natural sounds become part of the meditation practice, enhancing the user's connection to their environment. This relationship reinforces the goal of creating a space for mindfulness and a deeper appreciation of the surrounding nature.

The carefully positioned windows allow soft sunlight to fill the interior, casting gentle shadows that change throughout the day.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
