"COMMUNION" is situated along Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida, and aims to reshape the experience of terminally ill patients. The design focuses on building community and encouraging social connections, moving away from the isolation often found in traditional hospices. It creates an environment that supports interaction and emotional bonding among residents, allowing them to share their experiences during this crucial time.

Layout and Design

The project features several cylindrical glass containers organized along a central circulation path. This layout facilitates easy movement through the space while promoting interactions among users. The use of glass enhances the flow of natural light, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. Transparency is a key element, allowing for connections between the inside and the beautiful outdoor setting.

Community-Focused Spaces

At one end of the main circulation area is a multi-faith chapel, serving as a place for reflection and spiritual support. This space accommodates a variety of beliefs, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity during difficult times. It offers a calming area where individuals from different backgrounds can find peace and comfort, enhancing the sense of community within the facility.

Therapeutic Integration

Within the glass containers, a range of therapeutic services is available, including group and individual therapy, music therapy, art therapy, and private family rooms. This approach aims to foster emotional well-being and engage residents in meaningful activities. The thoughtful design encourages therapy and social engagement to coexist, enriching the overall experience for those facing terminal illness.

Spatial Experience

Open-ended social courts act as communal hubs, inviting residents to gather and connect. These spaces encourage conversations and shared moments, helping individuals reflect on their lives and connections with others. The architecture creates a flowing environment that aligns with the overall goal to promote togetherness and support during the end-of-life journey.

The roof structure undulates above the containers, supported by steel columns. This feature provides stability while also shaping the atmosphere inside. It modulates light throughout the day, creating a dynamic interplay between the interior and the landscape outside, which adds to the calm and reassuring environment that residents will experience in their final days.
