Curvilinear Wood Structures Nestled Among Green Terraces for Relaxation

Project in-detail

Curvilinear wood structures form an immersive retreat that integrates with the surrounding forest, offering spaces for relaxation and wellness through natural light and sustainable features.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curvilinear forms reflect the gentle postures of yoga throughout the design.
02
Sustainably sourced wood enhances connection to the surrounding forest environment.
03
Large outdoor terraces provide panoramic views of the valley and natural landscape.
04
Integrated solar energy systems contribute to the building’s energy efficiency.
05
A rainwater collection system supports irrigation for the adjacent forest area.

The yoga spa center is located within a forest, designed to promote relaxation and well-being for its visitors. The concept draws inspiration from yoga, using architectural shapes that convey motion and fluidity. This approach helps create a close relationship between natural surroundings and the structures, allowing users to engage with the environment in a meaningful way.

Conceptual Framework

Soft curves characterize the design throughout the center. Columns, fences, stairs, roofs, and pillars are shaped to reflect the gentle postures of yoga. This design language captures the ideas of harmony and balance found in yoga practice, creating a calm space for guests to experience.

Material Considerations

Locally sourced wood is a key material used in the project. This choice supports sustainability and underscores the connection to the forest setting. The wood contributes to a unified look, helping the structures blend into the natural environment and enhance the overall design.

Sustainability Features

Energy efficiency has been taken into account in the design. The roofs are angled to capture sunlight, allowing for effective solar energy use. A rainwater collection system is incorporated for maintenance and irrigation, demonstrating a dedication to environmental stewardship and resource management.

Spatial Integration

Each building has been thoughtfully laid out according to its size and the surrounding topography. Orientation is based on the sun's path, maximizing natural light throughout the spaces. Outdoor terraces offer clear views of the landscape, creating smooth transitions between indoor areas and nature.

Curved hammocks invite people to pause and relax, encouraging moments of reflection in a tranquil setting. These design details foster an atmosphere of peace, inviting visitors to unwind and enjoy their surroundings.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
