Curvilinear Structures Crafted from Moisture-Treated Plywood for Acoustic Performance

Project in-detail

Curved forms constructed from moisture-treated plywood create an immersive sound experience, facilitating diverse performances in a forest setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curvilinear design enhances sound projection while blending with the forest landscape.
02
Constructed primarily with moisture-treated plywood to withstand varying weather conditions.
03
Each stage is acoustically tailored for specific musical performances, optimizing sound quality.
04
Seating configurations accommodate 600 spectators, promoting community engagement.
05
The Metronome Bar serves dual functions as a refreshment area and sound element.

The Triplets project is an architectural endeavor located in the Latvian forest, designed for the Sansusi Festival. This project consists of three distinct sound-focused structures: Stage Treble, Stage Bass, and Metronome Bar. Each component serves a specific role in enhancing the auditory experience of performances within a natural setting, allowing for optimal sound propagation and audience interaction. The design integrates seamlessly with the landscape, emphasizing an immersive relationship between music and nature.

Unique Sound Design and Structural Configuration

Stage Treble is tailored for high-frequency sounds, suited for acoustic instruments and vocal performances. Its shape promotes direct sound travel, ensuring clarity and quality. Conversely, Stage Bass addresses lower frequencies, ideal for electronic and bass-heavy performances, providing a foundation for resonance and depth in sound. The Metronome Bar doubles as a refreshment area and an acoustic element, enabling dynamic sound interactions as it vibrates with the music, adding a layer of sensory engagement for visitors.

The project showcases innovative construction techniques with a focus on materiality. Utilizing moisture-treated plywood for framing, flexible plywood for sculptural elements, and concrete blocks for stability, the construction reflects durability and adaptability to the environment. The assembly process employs interlocking modules for efficient setup and dismantling, mitigating the need for heavy machinery while minimizing the project's ecological footprint.

Architectural Harmony with Nature

In addition to its functional aspects, the Triplets project emphasizes the visual and spatial relationship with its surroundings. Each structure features flowing forms that mirror the organic lines of the forest, creating an integrated aesthetic. The arrangement allows for variable audience seating configurations, accommodating up to 600 spectators while fostering a communal atmosphere that breaks conventional barriers between performers and their audience. This spatial planning enriches the experience, encouraging participation and connection to the music being performed.

The project effectively combines architectural design with artistic intent, establishing a multidimensional platform that promotes both performance and audience engagement in a natural environment. For those interested in understanding this project in greater depth, it is recommended to explore the architectural plans, sections, and design ideas presented, which provide further insights into the intricacies and execution of the Triplets project.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
