Curvilinear Structure Wrapped in High-Pressure Laminate and Granite Amidst Volcanic Landscapes for Relaxation and Craft Brewing

Project in-detail

Wrap-around beer baths constructed from durable high-pressure laminate and integrated into a curvilinear timber and granite structure create an immersive wellness experience that connects visitors to the surrounding Icelandic landscape through craft brewing and relaxation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Beer baths are integrated with panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape.
02
Curvilinear design allows for seamless indoor-outdoor transitions throughout the facility.
03
High-pressure laminate panels provide durability while mimicking natural textures.
04
Timber elements include locally sourced materials that enhance sustainability.
05
A central courtyard floods the spa with natural light, promoting a serene atmosphere.
The Iceland Beer Spa project, located in the Stuttsdag Craters of Iceland, represents a blend of architectural design and natural experience. This facility is conceived as a unique wellness destination that promotes relaxation through its integration of brewery and spa functions. The design serves not only as a recreational space but also as a point of connection between visitors and the Icelandic landscape.

The architectural approach focuses on creating a harmonious relationship between the building and its surrounding environment. The structure exhibits organic forms that reflect the nearby volcanic landscape, encouraging interaction with the outdoor scenery. Spaces within the spa are developed to facilitate movement and encourage exploration, creating a journey for guests as they transition between different areas of the facility.

Innovative Layout and Functionality

The layout of the Iceland Beer Spa is intentionally designed to offer varied experiences that cater to both individual and group visitors. The double-volume spaces create a sense of openness and connectivity throughout the building. The central feature of the brewery is prominently displayed, emphasizing the brewing process and allowing guests to engage visually with the art of craft beer production.

Important components include individual beer baths as well as communal beer soaking areas, which encourage social interactions while providing privacy when needed. The inclusion of treatment rooms, a shop, reception, and lounge areas ensures that all visitor needs are met in a cohesive manner. A well-designed courtyard allows natural light into the heart of the facility, enhancing the overall ambiance and visitor experience.

Unique Design Approaches

The architectural design incorporates several unique approaches that distinguish this project from other similar establishments. The curvilinear arrangement of spaces promotes an intuitive flow, enhancing the overall user experience while providing opportunities to appreciate the surrounding environment. The use of transparent materials, particularly glass, ensures visual continuity between interior and exterior spaces, allowing guests to remain connected to the natural landscapes outside.

Moreover, the materials selected for the construction—such as high-pressure laminate, wood, and natural stone—reflect the rugged beauty of Iceland and provide tactile contrast throughout the facility. The oval design of the beer bathing areas not only creates a sculptural element but also contributes to improved acoustics and a serene atmosphere.

For those interested in delving deeper into the architectural elements of the Iceland Beer Spa, exploring architectural plans, sections, and detailed designs can provide further insights into its innovative approach and comprehensive design strategy. This project exemplifies how architecture can successfully integrate wellness, craft, and environmental context.
