5 key facts about this project
01
The café’s design incorporates a bent A-frame structure that enhances stability and aesthetics.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels are utilized for both structural integrity and visual warmth, adding a unique touch to the interior.
03
Charred wooden shingles provide an innovative layer of protection while showcasing a distinct visual texture.
04
Large glass panels invite natural light and offer uninterrupted views of the surrounding volcanic landscape.
05
Dedicated exhibition space within the café promotes local art and cultural engagement, reinforcing community connections.

The Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop is a thoughtfully conceived architectural project designed by Herman du Plessis, reflecting a deep connection to the unique geographical context of Iceland. This coffee shop serves as both a social hub and a respite for visitors and locals alike, providing a cozy environment to enjoy beverages while immersing oneself in the spectacular views of the nearby volcano. The architectural design carefully considers the interplay between the indoor and outdoor environments, creating a seamless transition that invites the natural landscape into the café experience.

The project embodies a strong representation of Icelandic culture and heritage, drawing inspiration from the region's volcanic formations. By translating natural elements into architectural features, the design connects visitors to the land, encouraging a sense of place and belonging. Functionally, the Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop operates as a gathering space for people to come together, promoting social interaction and community engagement. The layout is organized to accommodate various functions, from casual coffee consumption to community exhibitions that showcase local art and culture.

Central to the design are the spatial configurations and flow, which enhance the user experience. The coffee bar is positioned prominently, serving as a focal point around which different seating areas radiate. This arrangement not only reinforces the social aspect of the café but also allows for comfortable movement throughout the space. Visitors can choose from a variety of seating options—ranging from communal tables to more intimate spaces—ensuring that the café caters to diverse needs and preferences.

A particular emphasis has been placed on materiality, with the selection of materials reflecting both aesthetic and functional considerations. Steel provides structural support while contributing to a modern industrial feel, while warm wooden elements evoke a sense of comfort. The use of large glass panels is particularly noteworthy; they invite ample natural light into the café and frame striking views of the volcanic landscape, thereby creating an immersive environment for patrons. The integration of concrete and granite further ties the architectural design to the natural geology of Iceland, reinforcing the connection to the surroundings.

Distinctive design approaches characterize the Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop, particularly in its innovative roof structure. The roof's curvilinear form not only serves practical purposes, such as efficient snow management, but also enhances the visual connection to the landscape. This design choice echoes the soft, organic shapes found in nature, helping the structure blend harmoniously with its environment. The entire composition reflects a thoughtful balance between modern aesthetics and natural forms, promoting sustainability while delivering a compelling architectural experience.

Interior details play a crucial role in shaping the overall atmosphere of the café. Custom-designed furniture and light fixtures contribute to a cohesive design language that aligns with the volcanic theme. The interior spaces are crafted to prompt exploration and discovery, encouraging patrons to engage with both the café's offerings and the surrounding environment.

For those interested in architecture, this project presents a wealth of insights regarding spatial organization, material use, and the integration of architectural design with landscape. Exploring the architectural plans, sections, and design elements of the Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop can provide a deeper understanding of how thoughtful design can enhance both function and experience. This project stands as a testament to the potential of architecture to create meaningful spaces that enrich the lives of individuals and communities alike. Visitors and architecture enthusiasts are encouraged to delve into a detailed presentation of this project to fully appreciate its nuances and the ideas it encapsulates.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
