5 key facts about this project
01
Modular living pods allow for customizable configurations based on user needs.
02
Curvilinear geometries enhance spatial flow and connectivity throughout the microhome.
03
Photovoltaic panels provide energy efficiency, aligning with sustainability goals.
04
Extensive use of glass maximizes natural light and fosters a connection to the outdoors.
05
Rainwater and greywater collection systems promote responsible resource management.

The Light Space Microhome project redefines modern living by using modular design concepts inspired by Japanese Metabolism Architecture. Located in an urban area, the structure focuses on meeting the needs of Millennials who prioritize flexibility and adaptability in their homes. The approach centers on separating essential living spaces, allowing for customization and a more personalized experience.

Modular Configuration

At the core of the design are individual pods that house the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen/dining areas. By dividing these spaces, the project allows homeowners to build their living environment according to their preferences. This modular setup encourages efficiency and accommodates future changes in family size or lifestyle, while staying within a compact limit of 268 square feet.

Spatial Flow and Aesthetics

The use of curvy shapes in the design helps create a friendly and connected feeling between the various pods. This layout encourages an easy flow throughout the home, making the most of the available space. Large glass doors, walls, and skylights ensure that natural light floods the interior, generating a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances the overall experience of living in the microhome.

Sustainability Measures

Sustainability is an important aspect of the Light Space Microhome. Photovoltaic panels contribute to energy savings and reduce the home's ecological footprint. Additionally, systems for collecting rainwater and greywater show a strong commitment to responsible resource use. These features enhance sustainability while meeting the growing demand for environmentally friendly living solutions.

Design Details

Clear design choices become evident in the use of glass, which connects indoor spaces with the outdoors. This transparency promotes a sense of openness and enhances privacy simultaneously. Attention to these details ensures that the microhome remains comfortable while being in tune with its environment. These elements reflect a thoughtful approach to modern needs and values.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization.
