Vale Oddeséia is located in the serene landscape of the Serra de Estrela mountains. It serves as a retreat for practices such as yoga and meditation. The design consists of two main parts: The Wall and The Shala. The overall concept focuses on creating harmony between the built environment and nature, providing a space for peace and reflection.

The Wall

The Wall is designed to create an intimate environment that encourages quiet thought and meditation. Its shape follows a curvilinear form, built using stones sourced from the nearby Vale de Moses. This choice of materials strengthens the structure while connecting it directly to the landscape. Inside, The Wall offers a calm setting ideal for personal practices, allowing individuals to feel grounded and embraced by their surroundings.

The Shala

In contrast, The Shala opens up to the views that are characteristic of the mountaintop. This design incorporates light timber framing along with translucent polycarbonate cladding. These materials allow light to flood the interior while maintaining a visual link to the natural surroundings. The Shala features operable and fixed windows that invite the fresh air and sights of the forest canopy inside, promoting a sense of freedom within the space.

Circulation and Experience

Circulation throughout Vale Oddeséia is carefully planned. It leads users through a journey, moving from the enclosed nature of The Wall to the more open atmosphere of The Shala. Each transition is marked by symbolic thresholds that strengthen the connection between the buildings and their environment. This thoughtful layout enhances the experience, allowing time for both reflection inside and engagement with the views outside.

Meditation Garden

At the center of the design is a meditation garden that serves as a peaceful focal point. This garden links The Wall and The Shala, symbolizing the balance of introspection and engagement with the landscape. It offers a quiet area for contemplation, reinforcing the intent to unite architecture with nature. The garden’s arrangement complements the overall design, creating a tranquil backdrop for personal exploration and connection with the outdoors.
