Curvilinear forms crafted from seamless concrete and red brick define a residence that seamlessly blends with its hillside setting, providing an immersive living experience focused on natural light and outdoor connectivity.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curvilinear roofline enhances natural ventilation throughout the residence.
02
Red brick façade provides thermal mass and visual warmth.
03
Large overhangs create shaded outdoor spaces for extended living areas.
04
Seamless concrete elements facilitate fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor environments.
05
Integrated photovoltaic panels promote renewable energy usage on-site.

## Project Overview
Located on a hillside site near Mount Echo Park Road, the residential structure is designed to engage with its natural surroundings. The concept focuses on modern architecture that diverges from traditional styles, employing innovative forms and materiality that respond to the landscape.

## Spatial Organization
The layout emphasizes fluidity and connectivity between interior and exterior spaces. Multiple interconnected volumes feature pronounced curves that facilitate natural light penetration and expansive views. The building orientation prioritizes visual engagement with the surroundings while minimizing impact on the site, fostering an immersive living experience that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor environments. Large overhangs provide shaded areas to reduce heat gain, contributing to overall comfort.

## Material Selection
This project employs a calculated assortment of materials that enhance both aesthetic and functional attributes. Key materials include:

- **Red Brick**: Used in darker hues, it provides warmth and textural contrast with the landscape.
- **Seamless Concrete**: Applied for curvilinear elements, ensuring structural integrity while enhancing design fluidity.
- **Aluminium Frames**: Incorporated in modular window systems to maximize glazing, promoting transparency and visual connections to the exterior.
- **Glass**: Extensively used to maximize natural light within the interior spaces.
- **Steel**: Functioning as a structural component, it supports the distinctive forms while contributing to a modern aesthetic.

This diverse material palette not only fosters visual cohesion but also enhances energy efficiency and resilience, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.

## Environmental Responsiveness
The design incorporates passive heating and cooling strategies afforded by its orientation and material choices. Photovoltaic panels on the roof highlight the integration of renewable energy solutions, further reducing the residence's ecological footprint. The combination of these elements demonstrates a thoughtful approach to harmonizing architectural innovation with environmental stewardship.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
