The Hverfjall Coffee House is located at the base of Hverfjall Volcano in the Mývatn region. It serves as a unique space for visitors to relax and enjoy the surrounding landscape. The design aims to connect the building with nature, enhancing the experience of being in this remarkable setting.

Architectural Concept

The form of the building features flowing shapes that draw the eye toward the volcano. This design choice encourages a visual connection with the landscape, allowing visitors to appreciate the scenery. The layout is planned to create an immersive experience, where the natural features of the area become an integral part of the visit.



Materiality

Basalt is used for both the inside and outside of the building. This choice of material reflects the volcanic nature of the region, reinforcing a strong connection to the landscape. Additionally, timber is used in the construction, contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the interior. These materials work together to enhance the overall experience of the space.



Sustainability Features

Sustainability is an important aspect of the design. The building includes a green roof, which supports local plants and wildlife. This feature contributes to thermal insulation and helps manage rainwater. Large windows let in natural light, allowing passive solar heating to warm the space during colder months, making the interior more comfortable.



Visitor Experience

The layout guides visitors on a journey through the building. They move from the parking area to the entrance, then through an exhibition space before reaching the coffee shop. This progression creates distinct spaces that invite exploration.
