The architectural design project “Under Ripple” is a columbarium located within the Forest Cemetery in Latvia. This project aims to provide a dedicated space for the commemoration of individuals, merging architecture with the natural landscape to foster quiet reflection. The design focuses on creating an environment that honors memories while integrating seamlessly with its surroundings. By employing a thoughtful arrangement of materials and spatial configurations, the columbarium presents visitors with a tranquil setting for remembrance.

Unique Design Elements and Approaches

“Under Ripple” distinguishes itself from traditional columbarium designs through its innovative architectural expression. The roof is crafted to resemble flowing waves, formed by slatted wooden louvers that filter and diffuse natural light throughout the interior. This architectural approach creates a dynamic interplay of shadows and sunlight, enhancing the visitors' experience and introspection.

The design incorporates multiple interaction spaces within the columbarium, providing areas for visitors to engage with their memories. Niches are tailored for placing ashes, lighting candles, and arranging flowers, promoting a personal and active approach to remembrance. This encourages visitors to not only reflect but also participate in the commemorative act, reinforcing the connection between the past and present.

Integration of Nature and Landscape

The columbarium is sensitively integrated into the surrounding forest landscape, with careful consideration given to sightlines and natural elements. Strategic apertures offer views of the trees and sky, bridging the interior and exterior environments. Water features are incorporated as reflective surfaces, providing a calming element that enhances the atmosphere and encourages meditation. Pathways leading to and from the structure connect it to the wider cemetery, facilitating a cohesive experience that emphasizes continuity in memory.

The architectural materials chosen for “Under Ripple” include wood, concrete, steel, glass, and stone. These materials are selected for their durability and aesthetic qualities, contributing to the overall environment conducive to reflection and peace. The combination of these materials not only ensures structural integrity but also aligns with the sensory experience that the project aims to create.

For those interested in a detailed understanding of “Under Ripple,” exploring the architectural plans, sections, and designs will provide further insights into the innovative ideas embedded in this project. The thoughtful integration of natural elements, unique design features, and the respectful approach to memory make this columbarium an important contribution to contemporary architecture within Latvia.
