The curved steel structure, enhanced by kinetic polycarbonate panels that sway in the wind, serves as a community gathering place, celebrating Latvian culture and the traditions of the summer solstice.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curved steel elements create an organic form that mimics natural tree growth.
02
Translucent polycarbonate panels allow for a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
03
The central bonfire area symbolizes cultural traditions tied to the Jani festival.
04
Winding circulation paths guide visitors through contrasting experiences of light and dark.
05
The design integrates elements of Latvian identity with modern architectural practices.

LIGO Tower, pronounced "Leeg-Wa" and meaning "Sway," serves as a notable structure in Latvia, designed to connect with the cultural traditions surrounding the summer solstice and the Jani festival. It combines practical use with symbolic meaning, bringing together the natural landscape and the deep-rooted customs of the Latvian people. The design reflects the balance of light and dark, incorporating two tree forms—Oak and Linden—into a unified structure that reaches upward.

Cultural Symbolism

The design communicates the strength and history of Latvian culture through its architectural form. The merging shapes of the Oak and Linden trees symbolize unity and resilience, representing the Latvian spirit. By integrating these elements from nature, the tower acknowledges the connection between the community and its surroundings. The winding paths within the tower facilitate movement and experience, guiding visitors through themes of life and the balance between opposing forces.

Dynamic Facade

The facade of LIGO Tower features kinetic and translucent polycarbonate panels that respond to the wind. This choice allows the structure to sway gently, creating a relationship with the environment. As light passes through these panels, it creates a changing internal atmosphere. Visitors experience shifts in illumination as they move through the space, making the journey feel alive and engaging.

Central Bonfire Element

At the top of LIGO Tower, a glass-enclosed area surrounds a central bonfire, symbolizing the "fire in the sky." This element connects directly to the traditions of the Jani festival, where fire represents rebirth and fertility. The design enhances the visual aspect of the tower while encouraging community interaction. Gathering around the bonfire provides a communal space, and the panoramic views from this location deepen the connection between visitors and the landscape.

The design balances natural shapes and structural form, offering a path that rises toward the sky. The varying heights and gentle curves of the steel elements reflect the growth found in nature, while the translucent panels unify the natural and built environments. The tower tells a story of Latvia’s cultural identity, inviting a connection to both history and the present.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
