With its curved ribs and transparent façades, the structure integrates sustainable materials and innovative construction methods to create a versatile resting space for tourists.
5 key facts about this project
01
Velo Stop integrates two curved ribs that support a unique paraboloid hyperbolic roof structure.
02
The transparent façades allow for maximum natural light and an unobstructed view of the surroundings.
03
Modular design allows for easy adaptation and expansion to meet changing user needs.
04
Adjustable aluminum louvres provide effective control of sunlight and privacy.
05
Solar panel integration enhances energy efficiency while reducing ecological impact.

The European Velo Stop is designed as a modular structure that serves various functions in different contexts. It is intended to be a tourist information hub and a resting area, offering a blend of innovation and environmental awareness. The project aims to connect users with their surroundings, providing a space that encourages interaction with nature.

Structural Form and Function
The design features a self-supporting framework with two curved ribs supporting a series of covering slabs shaped like paraboloid hyperbolas. This structure not only ensures stability but also presents a unique visual appeal. Elevated above the ground, it provides wide views and a strong connection to the environment, inviting visitors to engage with the landscape around them.

Material Selection
White concrete is used for the main structural elements, giving the building strength and durability. Transparent glass panels in the façades allow natural light to enter, which brightens the interior while creating a sense of openness. Wooden panels and boards add warmth to the walls and roof, making the space feel inviting. Adjustable aluminum louvers help manage light and privacy, combining function with thoughtful design.

Modularity and Adaptability
The Velo Stop demonstrates a modular design that supports different configurations based on user needs and site conditions. This adaptability ensures that the space can be expanded or modified without losing its key design elements. Each cabin can be tailored for various functions, allowing flexibility while maintaining a unifying style throughout.

Sustainable Design Features
The roof presents a gentle slope that accommodates the installation of solar panels, taking advantage of sunlight at different times of the day. This design choice enhances the building's energy efficiency, making it suitable for various environments while minimizing ecological impact. The overall layout avoids disturbing the surrounding area, reflecting a commitment to responsible design that works with the landscape.

The Velo Stop combines practical features with thoughtful design elements, making it a functional and engaging space. The use of transparent materials and well-considered shading solutions creates a pleasant atmosphere for visitors, encouraging both relaxation and exploration.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
