Curved Forms of Cross-Laminated Timber and Charred Shingles in a Mindful Retreat Space

Project in-detail

Curved forms of cross-laminated timber and charred wooden shingles define a retreat space designed to promote mindfulness and connection with nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curved structural elements enhance the connection between the building and its natural setting.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels provide both sustainability and structural integrity while reducing environmental impact.
03
Charred wooden shingles contribute to fire resistance and create a distinctive aesthetic.
04
The design integrates existing trees into the layout, preserving the ecosystem and enriching user experience.
05
A gray water system supports sustainable water management and nurtures onsite vegetation.
The "Sequence of Movements" architectural project integrates principles of yoga philosophy into its design, creating a space that promotes mindfulness and connection with nature. The structure is situated on a sloped site surrounded by trees, intentionally designed to foster a harmonious relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape. The architectural concept emphasizes fluidity and movement, mirroring the sequence of yoga postures.

The project's primary function is to serve as a retreat space, allowing individuals to engage in practices that enhance well-being. Movement is a central theme, guiding users through a series of interconnected spaces that include an entrance, a patio, a sleeping pod, and outdoor terraces. These areas are designed to encourage contemplation and interaction with the surrounding environment.

One of the defining aspects of this project is its materiality. The use of locally sourced pinewood for cladding combines aesthetic warmth with structural integrity. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is utilized for floors and walls, providing strength while maintaining sustainability. This careful selection of materials not only enhances the architectural form but also emphasizes an eco-friendly approach.

The design incorporates structural elements and details that reflect the principles of yoga. The curved shapes of the building resonate with the fluid movements of yoga postures, creating an inviting atmosphere. The sleeping pods are thoughtfully designed to navigate around existing trees, preserving the natural habitat while integrating the structure into the landscape.

Sustainability is a core aspect of the project. Environmental drainage solutions and a gray water system are integrated to manage water usage efficiently, supporting onsite flora and minimizing external resource dependence. The architectural design significantly draws upon passive cooling and natural ventilation strategies traditional to Portuguese architecture, ensuring comfort throughout the year without relying heavily on mechanical systems.

The overall design approach distinguishes this project from conventional architectural practices. By focusing on the elements of tranquility, sustainability, and a fluid spatial experience, this project redefines what a retreat space can offer. The incorporation of nature within the design process enhances the sensory experience, allowing users to engage with the environment meaningfully.

For those interested in a more in-depth understanding of this architectural project, exploring elements such as architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural designs will provide valuable insight into the thoughtful considerations behind its development. This project exemplifies how architecture can be utilized to create unique environments that promote wellness and sustainability.
