Curved Double Glazing and Solar Luminous Materials in a Flexible Urban Workspace

Project in-detail

Curved double glazing and solar luminous materials create a workspace that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor environments while prioritizing natural light and user interaction.
5 key facts about this project
01
Curved roof design optimizes natural light and views.
02
Balconies serve as functional outdoor workspaces.
03
Double glazing enhances energy efficiency and acoustic comfort.
04
Solar luminous materials provide dynamic lighting effects.
05
Open layout facilitates collaboration and flexibility.

The recent office design merges indoor and outdoor elements to create a modern workspace that enhances user experience. Located in an urban setting, the design focuses on functionality and sustainability. The goal is to foster connection and collaboration among occupants while reflecting a contemporary approach to work environments.

Curved Shapes and Open Layout

The design features soft, curved shapes that provide a visual contrast to the usual straight lines found in most office buildings. These curves create an inviting atmosphere that encourages interaction among employees. With minimal doors, the open layout allows for easy movement and communication, key aspects of today’s collaborative work culture.

Reduction of Enclosed Spaces

A notable feature of the design is the significant reduction of enclosed office spaces. This choice promotes a sense of community by minimizing barriers between employees. Without fixed cubicles, individuals can choose where to work based on their tasks and preferences. The result is a more adaptable environment that responds to the diverse needs of its users.

Natural Light Integration

Natural light plays an important role within the office. Double glazing in certain roof sections allows abundant daylight to enter the space. The incorporation of solar luminous materials in the glass enriches the interior by creating appealing light patterns. These materials are also energy-efficient, providing illumination when natural light fades in the evening.

Balcony as a Functional Workspace

Balconies are integrated into the design as functional outdoor areas, encouraging employees to spend time in nature. These balcony spaces provide alternatives for relaxation and focused work. By connecting the indoors with the outdoors, the design acknowledges the positive impact of nature on well-being and productivity, offering options for varied work experiences.

The large windows in the conference room draw in ample natural light, creating an uplifting atmosphere that fosters discussion and creativity.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
