The Volcano Museum, located in Northern Iceland near Lake Myvatn, integrates its design with the surrounding natural landscape. The site features flat terrain that allows for expansive views and offers visitors a chance to experience the Northern Lights. This design concept centers around the relationship between the museum and its environment. It serves as an educational space while also inviting visitors to engage with the area's geothermal activity and volcanic history.

Architectural Form

The building’s shape responds to the landscape, guiding the eye toward significant features like Lake Myvatn and Hverfjall Volcano. Its form flows naturally, reinforcing the connection between the constructed and natural environments. Key sightlines are prioritized, allowing visitors to appreciate the breathtaking views surrounding the museum. The design creates a sense of unity with the land.

Interior Experience

The museum spans three stories and includes elevated platforms designed to enhance the visitor experience. These platforms provide opportunities for viewing the landscape from various heights and angles. In addition, interior spaces prioritize a neutral color scheme. This choice directs attention to the powerful landscape outside, making it the focal point as visitors walk through the building.

Materiality

The design employs polished concrete to reflect the rugged appearance of Hverfjall Volcano. This choice adds a tactile quality to the space and strengthens the connection to the local geology. Timber elements are also incorporated, bringing warmth and contrast to the areas where visitors gather. This combination of materials helps create a welcoming environment amidst the stark beauty of the Icelandic landscape.

Natural Light and Connectivity

A central void in the building allows natural light to stream in, connecting different levels and enhancing the feeling of openness. This feature encourages a flow of movement and visual connections throughout the museum. Visitors can easily navigate from one area to another while engaging with educational exhibits. The thoughtful arrangement supports exploration and discovery, inviting guests to take their time as they immerse themselves in the rich natural history.

The details of the design work together to highlight the volcanic landscape, guiding visitors through a space that feels part of its environment. Every element serves to deepen the connection between the museum and the breathtaking Icelandic scenery.
