02
Bridge crossing offers unique views of the geological fissure.
03
Timber roof uses laminated beams for structural efficiency.
04
Design promotes visitor interaction with natural features.
05
Parking relocation minimizes disturbance to the site’s landscape.

The GRJÓTAGJÁ Cave Tower is located in a distinctive geological area and serves both as a viewing tower and a point of interest for people visiting the nearby caves. The design connects well with its environment, integrating naturally while providing a clear structure that is practical and visually engaging. The overall concept is based on a three-part division consisting of the crown, roofscape, and utility zone, creating a dynamic relationship with the landscape.

Architectural Composition

The building's design is organized into three main parts. The crown sits at the top and acts as an observation point, allowing visitors to take in the wide views of the surrounding landscape. The roofscape encourages movement and offers various vantage points, helping visitors engage with both the structure itself and the beauty around it. The utility zone holds the necessary services and functions, ensuring the facility operates effectively.

Visitor Engagement

A key aspect of the design is how it enhances visitor experience and interaction with the natural features of the area. The parking has been placed to the east of the site, positioning the tower on the west side of the fissure. This arrangement requires visitors to walk across a newly built bridge to enter the tower. This approach not only provides a unique view of the fissure but also reinforces a sense of exploration and anticipation as visitors make their way toward the entrance.

Materials and Structure

The materials chosen for the tower support both its function and aesthetic appeal. The crown is made from aluminum rods, which are light yet strong, allowing for flexible framing options of the landscape. The main structure utilizes a steel framework that effectively supports the loads acting on the building. The roof is designed for walking, using laminated timber beams to create a durable surface while also incorporating cantilevers that add visual interest. Sawn timber columns inside shear walls help stabilize the structure against lateral forces.

Design Details

GRJÓTAGJÁ Cave Tower stands as a thoughtful response to its unique geological surroundings. The design simplifies movement and interaction with the landscape, encouraging visitors to explore. Notably, the cantilevered roof eaves create shaded areas, making the space comfortable for visitors while framing views of the fissure and the horizon. This attention to detail highlights the design’s focus on enhancing user experience within a striking natural environment.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
