MICRO SOCIAL HOME is a residential project located in the center of Pisa, designed to address the housing needs of students and young professionals. The design concept emphasizes a blend of public interaction and private living. The building is organized to foster a sense of community while providing residents with personal spaces that offer privacy and comfort.

Dual Functional Spaces

The building layout divides the space into two main functions. The ground floor serves as a communal area, including spaces for exhibitions, a "take and leave" library, play zones, and a small café. This configuration encourages social engagement and interaction among residents and visitors. It fosters a lively environment where users can connect and share experiences. In contrast, the upper floors are dedicated to private living, designed to create a peaceful atmosphere separate from the activity of the ground level.

Contextual Integration

Located strategically in a central area of Pisa, the site is surrounded by historical landmarks and modern transportation facilities. It is adjacent to the newly developed Via Battisti city park, which enhances the urban living experience. The park offers green spaces for leisure and relaxation, integrating nature into the urban landscape. This location allows residents to enjoy both the vibrant city life and the tranquility provided by nearby recreational areas.

Sustainable Construction Approach

The project utilizes a modular and prefabricated construction method to enhance efficiency and adaptability. Each unit features a house-shaped external shell, comprising two floors and three internal cores that accommodate critical functions such as stairs, bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. The structure employs prefabricated laminated cross-laminated timber, known as x-lam, along with rock wool insulation to improve thermal performance. These materials support sustainability and energy efficiency, ensuring that the building meets the requirements for Nearly Zero Energy Buildings.

Architectural Details

Distinct entrances contribute to the functional design of MICRO SOCIAL HOME. The communal area is accessed through a front entrance equipped with shutters for security during the night. The private living spaces have an entrance at the rear, featuring a wood panel facade that offers privacy and visual separation from public areas. This design element clearly defines the boundary between social and private spaces and enhances the overall aesthetic of the building.
