The Mývatn Öl Brewery and Beer Spa is an architectural project situated in Iceland, focused on brewing and wellness experiences. The design integrates local resources and environmental considerations with a contemporary aesthetic, creating a facility that serves both practical and recreational functions.

The project comprises several distinct areas including brewing spaces, a spa, and visitor facilities, all centered on a theme of locality and sustainability. Utilizing modular building techniques, specifically through the use of shipping containers, the design promotes flexibility in use and adaptability to evolving needs. The materials selected, such as cross-laminated timber, basalt stone, and extensive glazing, reflect the natural environment while ensuring durability and functionality.

Unique Design Approaches

One of the most notable features of the Mývatn Öl Brewery and Beer Spa is its use of cross-laminated timber for the roof, which improves both insulation and structural performance, essential for the local climate. The facade combines powder-coated metal for modern appeal with basalt stone, providing a visual connection to the surrounding landscape. The thoughtful landscaping enhances the overall experience, drawing visitors into a natural setting.

The use of shipping containers not only contributes to sustainability but also enables distinct spatial arrangements. Different containers house various functions, from brewing operations to relaxation and wellness services, facilitating an intimate interaction with the space. This modular design also allows for future expansion, underscoring the project’s adaptability.

Spatial Layout and Functional Components

The layout of the facility is designed to optimize visitor experience while maintaining operational efficiency. The ground floor is dedicated to brewing, featuring areas for production and a café, serving as the main entry point for visitors. Above, the first floor houses spa facilities, including treatment rooms and a dedicated beer-tasting area. Elevated viewing platforms provide guests with panoramic perspectives of the surrounding Icelandic landscape, reinforcing the connection between the built environment and nature.

The Mývatn Öl Brewery and Beer Spa exemplifies a strong emphasis on architectural and environmental integration, with thoughtful consideration of materiality and user experience. The facility’s design reflects an understanding of local culture and landscape, making it a noteworthy addition to the region's architecture.
