The River Runner is designed for cyclists traveling along the EuroVelo 6 route. It features two main components: a cabin and a linear bar that serves as infrastructure. The design effectively combines practicality with a thoughtful approach to the natural setting. It aims to enhance the cycling experience by providing facilities that are both functional and user-friendly, all while blending into the landscape.

Conceptual Framework

The core idea behind the design focuses on the linear bar, which operates as the primary organizer of space. This element collects important amenities into a single, functional unit. By doing so, it reduces clutter and simplifies the user experience. The linear bar can operate independently from the cabin, making it suitable for situations where only day-use facilities are required. This flexibility allows the design to cater to diverse user needs along the biking route.

Spatial Configuration

The layout of the River Runner includes three configurations: a stand-alone bar, the integration of campsites, and a cabin arrangement. Each setup is carefully designed to enhance user experience while maintaining a consistent aesthetic. The stand-alone bar includes necessary features such as a kiosk and vertical bike storage. When tents are added in the campsite setup, it creates opportunities for outdoor living. The cabin configuration, featuring additional amenities like a sink and shelving, improves comfort for overnight guests.

Structural and Material Considerations

The design incorporates sound structural choices. The cabin is raised on six helical pilings, which lessens the need for deep site excavation while ensuring stable support on uneven terrain. This method enhances the structure’s durability and visual fit within the landscape. The walls of the cabin are made of five-ply cross-laminated timber, a choice that offers insulation and warmth. The flooring, made of maple plywood, contributes to a cohesive look while being durable enough for regular use.

Design Detail

The cabin includes large floor-to-ceiling windows that connect the indoor space to the outside. These windows allow natural light to fill the room and provide views of the surrounding environment. This feature enhances the overall experience for users by letting them enjoy both the comfort of the cabin and the beauty of the landscape.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
