Cross-Laminated Timber and Green Courtyards Enhancing Affordable Urban Living

The integration of shared courtyards into urban housing design addresses the need for affordable living while fostering community relationships. Located in Berlin, the project reimagines the courtyard as a vital component of residential architecture, reinforcing neighborly connections and promoting social engagement. The design strategically dismantles barriers between living spaces, creating an inviting environment that enhances both the functional and aesthetic aspects of urban life.

Design Concept

The architectural strategy centers on infill housing that enriches the existing urban landscape. By prioritizing shared yards, the design supports a model of living that cultivates interaction among residents while maintaining individual privacy. The layout is characterized by flexibility, accommodating varying family sizes and lifestyles through adaptable housing configurations.

Material Selection

Materials have been carefully chosen to align with sustainability goals, emphasizing efficient resource use within the construction process. The primary structural component, cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, promotes energy efficiency and lightweight construction. Other materials include insulation, gypsum boards, waterproofing, sedum, wood panels, and flooring, each contributing to the overall performance and longevity of the building.

Architectural Integration

Design guidelines ensure coherence with the surrounding environment. Maintaining proportions such as a plan diameter three times the width of the courtyard and a height that does not exceed three-quarters of the elevation fosters a harmonious relationship with existing structures. The result is a cohesive urban landscape where new interventions enhance rather than disrupt the character of the neighborhood.

The design includes communal features such as shared balconies, urban farming areas, and multifunctional spaces that encourage diverse activities. These elements are integrated to promote collaboration and social interaction among residents. The expansiveness of the courtyards lets in natural light, while greenery and communal facilities provide vital social hubs for gatherings and conversations.
