5 key facts about this project
The project is situated at the junction of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, drawing inspiration from the nearby Grjótagjá caves. This unique location informs the design concept, emphasizing a cultural pavilion that aligns with the rugged Icelandic landscape. The architecture aims to create a space for community gatherings and cultural events while respecting its natural environment.
Conceptual Framework
The design features a primary mass made up of three interconnected volumes that follow the curves of the surrounding road. This layout enhances the visual connection to the landscape and supports the flow of movement for visitors. The volumes engage with their surroundings, creating an inviting atmosphere.
Tectonic Influence
A central aspect of the design is the use of the “cracking” concept. This approach symbolizes the tectonic actions occurring in the area. The intentional fissures introduced into the mass enhance the spatial arrangement and create a sense of tension within the structure. This method reflects the natural divisions found in the surrounding geology, establishing a strong relationship with the site.
Material Expression
The exterior consists of black concrete and a glass entry façade. This combination highlights the contrast between the rugged landscape and the building while also blurring the line between the interior and exterior. Large glazed surfaces allow natural light to fill the interior spaces, enhancing the experience for those inside and providing views of the landscape.
Interior Atmosphere
Inside, warm wooden cladding contrasts with the concrete walls, creating a balanced environment. The mixture of materials establishes visual interest and enhances the sense of space. Adaptable areas are designed to host various activities, allowing the pavilion to function as a community center.
The cinema theater serves as a prominent feature, with its peak elevated to form a focal point. This design choice draws the eye and encourages interaction within the architectural space. By lifting the mass, the structure promotes exploration and adds to the unique experience of the pavilion.
