The VOLID TOWER stands in the distinctive landscape of Iceland, capturing the rich folklore of trolls found within the region. It serves as both an observation point and a space for education, designed to provide an engaging experience for visitors. The concept emphasizes the relationship between void, light, and darkness, allowing the structure to reflect cultural stories in a tangible way.

Form and Function

The design of the tower expresses the image of a troll in motion, frozen at the moment of becoming stone as it rushes toward a cave before sunrise. This theme is evident in the structure’s dual aspects. One side features a static facade with vertical lines, illuminated by light, suggesting stability and permanence. The other side introduces chaotic forms emerging from the shadows of the chasm, suggesting movement and vitality. This contrast effectively showcases the storytelling elements of the trolls' legends.

Geographical Context

Located in Iceland, the VOLID TOWER connects visitors to its unique geological features. The pathway leading underground to the tower serves not only for access but also transforms into an exhibition space. Here, guests can learn about the local lore of trolls, elves, and other figures from Icelandic mythology. This thoughtful design approach enhances the experience, allowing individuals to engage deeply with the stories that this area has to offer.

Materiality and Structural Details

Brown-orange corten serves as the exterior material for the tower's facade, harmonizing with the colors of the surrounding landscape. The use of curved panels and bars in the underground section promotes a sense of movement, reinforcing the design's themes. The structural components are carefully crafted to provide support while also offering small balconies that direct attention upwards to the sky and downwards to reflective surfaces. This design enriches the spatial experience, inviting exploration and curiosity about the environment.

An important feature is the semi-transparent walking platform, which brings visitors closer to the rock walls of the chasm. This arrangement allows for tactile interaction with the natural elements, enhancing the overall connection to the landscape. Visitors can appreciate the dramatic views of the tower, creating a dialogue between built form and the beauty of the environment.
