The Kurgi Observation Tower is located in North Latvia, positioned within the natural landscape of the Biosphere Reserve. This structure serves as both an observatory and a space for meditation, designed to foster a connection between visitors and the local environment while emphasizing Latvian cultural heritage. The design concept reflects the interplay between nature and human experience, focusing on how architecture can resonate with the surrounding landscape.

Symbolic Design Elements

The architecture prominently features the Jumis symbol, which represents fertility and prosperity. The differing patterns on the north and south facades highlight this symbolism. The south facade presents an upward-facing Jumis design, while the north incorporates a downward pattern. This contrast enriches the overall aesthetic and reinforces the project's links to Latvian cultural values and the natural world.

Accessibility and Movement

Circulation within the tower is designed with accessibility in mind. Instead of traditional staircases, the building uses ramps with a maximum slope of 1:6. This design choice allows all visitors to move comfortably throughout the space. The ramps create an engaging ascent, inviting individuals to experience the journey as much as the destination.

Spatial Organization and Experience

The tower includes several observation platforms, thoughtfully placed to provide unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. These spaces encourage visitors to pause and reflect. In addition, a meditation room is part of the experience, adding to the serene atmosphere of the site. This room fosters personal reflection and a deeper connection to both nature and the cultural significance of the area.

Material Selection and Integration

Weathered steel, known as Corten, is a primary material in the design. Its ability to naturally age allows the tower to blend with its environment. This choice emphasizes durability, ensuring that the structure remains in harmony with the landscape over time. Metal mesh panels also play a significant role in the facade, allowing light to filter through and creating engaging visual experiences throughout the day.

The observation platforms have been crafted with careful attention to detail. They offer clear views that invite visitors to contemplate the landscape and consider the rich cultural stories intertwined with the land.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
