Forestarium Riga is located in Latvia and serves as a columbarium designed to reflect the cultural relationship of the Latvian people with nature and memory. The overall design concept centers around the idea of the "Circle of Life." This creates a space for remembrance, while also promoting a sense of connection between life and death. The thoughtful integration of natural elements and personal reflection invites visitors into a space that encourages contemplation.

Design Concept

The foundation of the design rests on three main ideas: a connection to nature, privacy in mourning, and the enduring relationship between the living and the deceased. Circular paths create a flow for visitors, guiding them through the columbarium while fostering exploration and moments of quiet contemplation. Elevating the structure above the ground helps establish a close connection with the surrounding landscape, creating an environment that supports reflection.

Spatial Configuration

The arrangement of walls is intentional, allowing for distinct spaces that provide privacy while maintaining a visual link to the outdoors. This careful balance between open and enclosed areas helps create an atmosphere that supports visitors during their grieving process. Individuals can navigate their emotions freely, moving through various settings that cater to different phases of remembrance.

Structural Elements

Carefully considered structural layers define the design, with tree bases symbolizing strength and support for the columbarium. The trees' roots connect to the ground, emphasizing harmony between nature and architecture. Steel rings and beams enhance the stability of these enclosures, adding to their significance within the broader design.

Materials and Lighting

Corten steel is used for the walls and benches, giving a rugged appearance that complements the environment. Concrete serves a crucial role in ensuring the structure's durability, making it suitable for long-term use. To enrich the visitor experience, LED lights are integrated into the design, positioned on top of the trees to create a gentle glow during the evening hours. This adds a serene quality to the columbarium, inviting those who enter to pause and reflect.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
