Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the building presents a functional environment designed specifically for visually impaired individuals. The design features an undulating wall made from Corten steel, acting as both a structural element and a sculptural form. This project aims to create a living space that supports user independence and enhances interaction through the use of tactile and auditory experiences.

Architectural Concept

At the heart of the design is the integration of architecture and sculpture. The undulating wall encourages engagement through touch, while also promoting a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. By rethinking traditional layouts, the building allows visually impaired users to navigate their environment more effectively and meaningfully.

Sensory Engagement

A key focus is on sensory experiences that aid navigation and connection to the surroundings. The exterior wall has been designed with piano keys, which produce sounds that help guide users toward the entrance. A sensory courtyard further enriches this experience, featuring aromatic plants such as mint and lavender that stimulate the sense of smell and enhance the overall atmosphere.

Interior Layout

The interior layout prioritizes communal interaction while offering spaces for individual comfort. An open-plan communal area fosters conversation, making it easier for residents to connect. Private spaces, such as the sleeping room made entirely of memory foam, focus on personal comfort and adaptability. Clothing storage is arranged based on wearability, making it easier for users to find what they need while reinforcing their understanding of the space.

Functionality and Usability

Practicality is a key consideration in the kitchen design. Cabinetry includes cutouts that indicate the shapes of various pots, serving dual purposes as both indicators and handles. Cutlery storage is organized on a magnetic plate, simplifying access and keeping the area tidy.

The combination of these elements creates a living environment that balances design and usability. The sensory courtyard, filled with fragrant herbs, invites exploration and interaction. It acts as a welcoming threshold, setting the stage for the experiences that await inside the home.
