Rising from the Icelandic landscape, a corten steel tower integrates geothermal energy with an artificial earth mound to provide a visitor center that enhances access to the Grjótagjá caves.
5 key facts about this project
01
Corten steel clads the tower, enhancing its connection to the natural landscape.
02
The visitor center is concealed within an artificial earth mound, reducing visual impact.
03
High-tension cables provide structural support while maintaining a light appearance.
04
Night illumination makes the tower a navigational guide for visitors exploring the area.
05
Printed images of the Grjótagjá caves on the inner skin enhance the site's narrative.

The Cave Tower project is located in the distinctive landscape of Iceland, right next to the Grjótagjá caves. It presents a thoughtful mix of architecture and nature, built to enhance the experience of visitors. Inspired by the idea of a plant emerging from the earth, the design symbolizes growth and connection to the land. The tower acts not only as a landmark but also as a guiding light, helping people navigate toward the unique geological features of the region.

Design Concept

The main feature of the structure, called The Pinnacle, rises majestically from the ground. It draws on the imagery of the biblical Burning Bush, embodying the idea of organic growth. The tower’s form creates a sense of direction for visitors, especially at night, when it becomes a beacon pointing towards the natural phenomena around it.

Visitor Center

The visitor center is designed to blend into an artificial earth mound, which helps to reduce visual impact. Within this mound, essential facilities such as a reception area, toilets, and a café are discreetly hidden, keeping the focus on the landscape. The arrangement encourages exploration, leading visitors along winding pathways that connect various attractions, including the caves.

Structural Framework

The project employs engineering methods that ensure both strength and sustainability. High-tension steel cables connect the tower to an adjoining bridge, providing necessary support while complementing the local environment. The foundation consists of shallow concrete raft structures anchored in bedrock through deep concrete piles, creating a strong link to the ground beneath.

Materiality

Corten steel is used for the outer layer of the tower, giving it a natural look that resonates with the surroundings. This choice enhances the connection between the structure and the landscape while aligning with sustainable design principles. The inner surface showcases printed images of the Grjótagjá caves, enriching the visitor experience by tying the architecture to the natural setting.

The design concludes with a refined relationship between built form and nature, highlighted by the tower’s illumination at night. This glowing feature emphasizes the beauty of the environment, drawing attention to the unique cave systems while creating a sense of wonder for all who visit.
