A spiraling helix of corten steel topped with pink accents rises from the Al Wathba Wetland, providing an accessible observation point that deepens engagement with the local ecosystem and its iconic flamingo population.
5 key facts about this project
01
The watchtower features a helix form that enhances the visitor experience through dynamic views.
02
Steel flamingo heads are integrated into the design for visual emphasis and connection to local wildlife.
03
The structure is entirely wheelchair-accessible, promoting inclusivity for all visitors.
04
Corten steel is used for its weathered appearance, harmonizing with the natural landscape.
05
The tower's design allows for 360-degree perspectives of the wetland and surrounding industrial areas.

The Al Wathba Wetland watchtower serves both as a viewing platform and a recognizable structure in the Al Wathba Wetland reserve. Located within an area rich in biodiversity, it highlights the reserve's flamingo population while responding to nearby industrial elements. The design aims to create a connection between the natural environment and human activity, promoting ecological awareness and providing access for all visitors.

Design Concept

The watchtower’s shape resembles a spiral, rising upwards to create an engaging vertical experience. It allows for a complete view of the wetland, encouraging visitors to appreciate both the wildlife and the industrial backdrop of masts and cranes. This form illustrates a blend of soft natural lines and straight man-made edges, fostering a conversation between these contrasting aspects of the landscape.

Materials

Corten steel is the primary material used in the construction, chosen for its weathered surface that integrates well with the natural setting. This choice offers durability and reduces the need for maintenance. Pink-painted steel adorns the heads of the flamingos on the structure, establishing a clear connection to the reserve’s avian inhabitants. Wooden walkways and platforms throughout the tower complement the steel, creating warmth and an inviting atmosphere for those who explore the space.

Accessibility and Engagement

A core aspect of the design focuses on accessibility. The watchtower includes a boardwalk that accommodates wheelchairs, ensuring that people of all abilities can enjoy the views. Various observation points invite visitors to come close to the flamingos, encouraging a deeper connection with the local ecosystem. This commitment to accessibility positions the watchtower as an educational resource that can be appreciated by everyone in the community.

Architectural Detail

As visitors move up through the watchtower, light and shadow play across its surfaces, creating a shifting visual experience. Observation platforms are thoughtfully arranged to invite reflection on the surrounding environment. This design encourages a greater awareness of the wetland's ecosystem, emphasizing the relationship between the built structure and the vibrant life within the reserve. The watchtower stands as a testament to the ongoing dialogue between nature and human presence.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
